Thalassotherapy and climatic health resort
Crikvenica was recognised as an ideal place for rest, recovery and treatment more than a hundred years ago thanks to its mild Mediterranean climate, clean air rich in sea aerosols, pleasant sea and mountain air currents, and clean, shallow sea. The natural benefits of this area formed the basis for the development of health tourism as early as the 19th century and continue to preserve health, support prevention and rehabilitation, and improve quality of life to this day.
The Crikvenica Riviera, located in Kvarner Bay, is protected from strong northern winds by the hills in the hinterland, resulting in a stable, mild and healthy climate. The large number of hours of sunshine, the clean air and sea, and the mix of sea and mountain air make the area particularly suitable for the treatment of respiratory diseases. According to the Köppen climate classification, Crikvenica has a moderately warm rainy climate, with warm summers, mild winters and more than 2,300 hours of sunshine per year.
The sea along the Crikvenica Riviera is characterised by a high level of bathing quality, constant currents and a salinity of about 4%, while summer sea temperatures reach 27°C. The air, enriched by essential oils from Mediterranean vegetation, is exceptionally clean, rich in ozone, iodine, sodium and chlorine, with minimal concentrations of allergens, and thus ideal for cleansing and recovery of the respiratory tract.
Thalassotherapia Crikvenica cherishes the centuries-old tradition of applying climatotherapy and thalassotherapy — the natural healing factors of the sea and coastal climate. Climatotherapy includes spending time outdoors, walking, breathing exercises and medically guided therapeutic treatments by the sea. Thalassotherapy involves the use of seawater for therapeutic purposes, including inhalations and physical therapy treatments in seawater. The therapies use Aqua Maris, purified Adriatic seawater produced to pharmaceutical standards.
