Inhalation Therapy Department

Inhalation therapy is carried out in a dedicated inhalation unit, the largest of its kind on the Adriatic coast and recognised at European level. Modern devices enable high-quality dispersion of natural elements such as seawater, essential oils and medications, achieving exceptional therapeutic effects.

A specialised vibrational aerosol device is also used, which, through vibrational enhancement, enables deeper penetration of aerosol particles into the sinuses, while ultrasound technology produces a fine, more uniformly dispersed aerosol with particle sizes of 0.5–4 microns.

IPPB devices (intermittent positive pressure breathing) enable the administration of inhaled medication under intermittent positive pressure, dispersing medication particles into the deepest parts of the respiratory system. They are intended for the treatment of lung patients.

In addition to inhalation therapy, the inhalation unit also offers Proetz displacement procedures (nasal aspiration) and throat irrigation. These procedures effectively cleanse the mucous membranes of the upper and lower respiratory tract, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of inhaled medications.

The inhalation team consists of medical staff with many years of experience in inhalation therapy.

Inhalation therapy

Inhalation therapy at Thalassotherapia Crikvenica involves the administration of dispersed natural medicinal solutions, medications or gaseous substances into the respiratory tract, where they act locally and in part systemically through the lung tissue. The medicinal substance is heated to body temperature using modern technology and dispersed into an aerosol of different particle sizes:

  • Aerosol particles up to 5 microns (dry inhalation) are intended for the lower respiratory tract.
  • Aerosol particles 5–10 microns in size (moist inhalation) are intended for the upper respiratory tract.

Given the unified system of the upper and lower respiratory tracts and the fact that 8 out of 10 patients with asthma also have allergic rhinitis, both types of inhalation are applied according to indication.

Other procedures include inhalation of essential oils and medications (corticosteroids, mucolytics, beta2 agonists, anticholinergics).

Inhalation of essential oils for medical purposes is supported by numerous scientific studies. At Thalassotherapia Crikvenica, essential oils have been used in inhalation therapy since 1961, following the recommendation of academician Ivo Padovan. The formulation has remained unchanged to this day.
